Our Mission
To provide clothing, shoes and grooming services to school-aged children in the Greater Houston and surrounding areas. We believe that providing a child with these essentials can build self-confidence and self-esteem, which in turn establishes the foundation to help them reach their full potential in life.

The Butterfly Effect
The way a child sees themselves in relation to their peers can have an adverse effect on whether they excel in the future. Sometimes, just a simple, clean school uniform and new shoes can be enough to level the playing field and change the trajectory of a student’s life— especially if they are being bullied for the way they present themselves due to circumstances beyond their control. Oftentimes, they just need someone to see their potential and provide a hand-up, not a hand-out.
We seek to disrupt the preschool-to-prison pipeline by giving children the confidence they need right at the primary level—carrying them through to academic achievement, to job performance, to positively impacting their community and beyond.

About The Butterfly Clothing Project
The Butterfly Clothing Project Inc. was founded in 2015 by Micole Powell, and was named in memory of her mother, who promised Micole that she would return someday as a butterfly just before her death in 1993.
Since that time, Micole has had regular, close encounters with butterflies of the rarest and most beautiful species.
“Growing up in a house with five sisters, we wore a lot of hand-me-downs and as one of the middle girls, I received more than my fare share. However, my mother was resourceful and would skillfully mix in a few new items and occasionally take me on a “special adventure” to the local thrift store, where I really had to get creative. Although grateful and understanding of our budget for clothing with 6 girls, I often felt self-conscious about my clothes. I spent many school days distracted and sometimes withdrawn because of my attire, until one day I encountered a student whose clothing was much less suitable. The students on the bus were teasing him because they had marked his jeans with liquid paper (I know I’m dating myself) and when he wore the same jeans the next day they shamed him publicly in front of his peers. I remember almost everyone on the bus erupting into laughter and their humiliating comments, and felt horrible for that student.
As an adult, while reflecting on those feelings from my childhood, I decided to create a charitable organization that would cater to the families of children who, for myriad reasons, are unable to afford suitable clothing for school. I chose to incorporate the butterfly; firstly, in remembrance of my dear mother and secondly, because of what the butterfly represents—Metamorphosis and Renewal!”
The Butterfly Clothing Project, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization.
